2. _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n
This chapter lists information supplemental to the _I_R_I_S
_S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e. The information listed here is
product-specific; use it with the Installation Guide to
install this product.
2.1 _C_u_s_t_o_m_e_r_L_i_n_k__S_u_b_s_y_s_t_e_m_s
CustomerLink includes the following subsystems:
_c_u_s_t_l_i_n_k._b_o_o_k_s CustomerLink help cards
_c_u_s_t_l_i_n_k._e_n_v CustomerLink international language
environments
_c_u_s_t_l_i_n_k._m_a_n._c_u_s_t_l_i_n_k CustomerLink reference pages
_c_u_s_t_l_i_n_k._m_a_n._r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s CustomerLink release notes (this
document)
_c_u_s_t_l_i_n_k._r_g_b_i_m_a_g_e._s_y_s_t_e_m_s Images of hardware systems
_c_u_s_t_l_i_n_k._s_w._b_a_s_e CustomerLink base software
2.2 _C_u_s_t_o_m_e_r_L_i_n_k__S_u_b_s_y_s_t_e_m__D_i_s_k__S_p_a_c_e__R_e_q_u_i_r_e_m_e_n_t_s
This section lists the subsystems (and their sizes) of
CustomerLink.
If you are installing this option for the first time, the
subsystems marked ``default'' are the ones that are
installed if you use the ``go'' menu item. To install a
different set of subsystems, use the ``install,''
``remove,'' ``keep,'' and ``step'' commands in _i_n_s_t to
customize the list of subsystems to be installed, then
select the ``go'' menu item.
Note: The listed subsystem sizes are approximate. Refer to
the _I_R_I_S _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for information
on finding exact sizes.

2.3 _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__M_e_t_h_o_d
All of the subsystems for CustomerLink can be installed
using IRIX. You do not need to use the miniroot. Refer to
the _I_R_I_S _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for complete
installation instructions.
2.4 _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s
CustomerLink 2.2.3 requires that your workstation be running
IRIX 6.5 with the following product installed:
elec_svcs Electronic Services
- 3 -
Please refer to the release notes for the above product for
complete installation instructions.
2.5 _H_o_w__t_o__g_e_t__t_h_r_o_u_g_h__f_i_r_e_w_a_l_l
You may skip this section if you do not have firewall
between the system running custlink and the Internet. To
find out whether you can reach SGI electronically or not,
try the ping command:
////uuuussssrrrr////eeeettttcccc////ppppiiiinnnngggg 111199992222....88882222....222200008888....5555
If it works, skip to the next section on name service.
Otherwise, you will have to do one of the following:
1. CustomerLink is socksified. If your site runs sockd as
its gateway proxy server, you may enable custlink to
connect to the Internet by setting the SOCKS_SERVER
environment variable. For example, if your site has
sockd running on a company gateway called abc-
gateway.com, you would do the following:
sssseeeetttteeeennnnvvvv SSSSOOOOCCCCKKKKSSSS____SSSSEEEERRRRVVVVEEEERRRR aaaabbbbcccc----ggggaaaatttteeeewwwwaaaayyyy....ccccoooommmm
Depending on how your local environment is set up, you
may also need to set the SOCKS_NS environment variable
to the IP address of the machine that runs name
service for your site. For example, if the IP address
of the name service machine for your site is
123.123.123.123, you would do the following:
sssseeeetttteeeennnnvvvv SSSSOOOOCCCCKKKKSSSS____NNNNSSSS 111122223333....111122223333....111122223333....111122223333
Please consult with your network administrator on
whether you have sockd and name server running and the
actual hostnames to use.
You may wish to put these lines in your .cshrc file so
that they are automatically set whenever you log in.
You may also need an /etc/socks.conf file on your
system; ask your system administrator for this file.
If you are unable to obtain one, you may create your
own /etc/socks.conf file containing only the line:
sockd 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
- 4 -
2. If your site does not run sockd, you would have to
configure the firewall to pass outgoing packets with a
destination of _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_g_i._c_o_m _p_o_r_t _6_0_1_3
(_1_9_2._8_2._2_0_8._5._6_0_1_3). This is the system and port
number used for connecting to Silicon Graphics'
Technical Assistance Center. _c_u_s_t_l_i_n_k requires a bi-
directional connection to send requests and receive
replies to and from the server-port. There is no need
to establish a separate connection for each direction.
2.5.1 _N_a_m_e__S_e_r_v_i_c_e If your site uses NIS or BIND name
services, you must add these entries to the hosts database
on your server:
111199992222....88882222....222200008888....5555 iiiinnnnssssiiiigggghhhhtttt....ssssggggiiii....ccccoooommmm
Otherwise, manually add the above entry to your /_e_t_c/_h_o_s_t_s
file. For further information on host name resolution,
please refer to "IRIX Advanced Site and Server
Administration Guide" or the man page for resolver(4).
For further information, refer to the _c_u_s_t_l_i_n_k(1).
2.6 _A_f_t_e_r__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n
In order for CustomerLink to work it needs to contact SGI's
server on insight.sgi.com port 6013.
The software will create the custlink icon on the
_I_c_o_n_C_a_t_a_l_o_g "SupportTools" page.
